Ringwood U3A were delighted by the response to their Open Morning on 16th February when five new members were recruited on the day with as many again planning to come to the next meeting to join then.

Leaders from most of the club’s 27 interest groups attended with displays and talked to potential recruits about the various activities available ranging from Art to Walks.  With full year membership costing just £24 the friendly club is accessible to all retired and semi-retired people living in the area.  A warm welcome awaits anyone who would like to attend one of the regular meetings which are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the main hall at Greyfriars.

Speakers at forthcoming meetings are as follows:-

Roy Norton: “50 Years In Television”. Roy, a former senior producer/director of both BBC and ITV will be looking back at some of the great milestones in TV history from the pioneers of the 1920-30’s to the exciting present day technology including many ‘off camera’ anecdotes, gossip, scandals and some memorable mess ups.

Thursday, May 16th 2019, 2pm

Steve Roberts: “Dad’s Army – Fact & Fiction” An affectionate look at both the Home Guard and its portrayal in the popular TV series Dad’s Army.  Looking at the real Home Guard, why it was formed and what it did, with some popular myths dispelled in the process.  Also looking at the TV series, the characters, the actors who played them, the catchphrases, film locations, best episodes and so forth.  Although a sitcom it is worth recording that the real Home Guard lost over 1,600 members, killed on duty, during its lifetime with two of its number posthumously receiving the George Cross, this nation’s highest gallantry award for those not facing the enemy.  The talk attempts to be lively and fun but also to set the record straight.
