To put you           NEWSLETTER No: 177

in the picture                 May 2008

Welcome to our Summer Newsletter, heralding longer days and warmer weather, so that although winter activities may have come to an end, there are still plenty of other things going on here at Greyfriars.
It won’t have escaped your notice that this is the Association’s 50th Anniversary Year – hence the gold finish to the Newsletters and Programme.  The year has got off to a cracking start, with our 12th Night Supper; a very interesting Day School on the Modern Art Market; and our magnificent Masked Ball.  By the time you read this I am sure you will also have enjoyed our Spring Supper and are looking forward to the other activities planned for the Summer, details elsewhere in this Newsletter.  Or consult the notice board or website.
Of course all these things don’t just happen by themselves, and we are most grateful to all those who give their time, effort and expertise to put on such events.  A large number of people are involved, but in particular I would like to mention Doris Hughes for the Day Schools; Brenda Titt and the Special Events Committee for all the gourmet food; and Mimi Parry for organising the Ball.  I must not forget our Quiz Master Julian Titt who runs our Challenge Quiz, and this year managed to include questions about what else happened in the year 1958.  Congratulations to our winners, the Ringwood and Fordingbridge Footpath Society.  Many thanks also to our Secretary Gillian Habbin and Manager Janet Dolby who do all the behind the scenes work, for everything that happens.  Janet, together with her husband, also runs our film evenings – have you tried them yet?
Our plans for the refurbishment of Ebenezer Hall are making steady progress, and it is hoped that work will start in September, all being well.  Although this is very exciting, I am afraid it will be another headache for Janet, trying to re-house all those who enjoy the Ebenezer Hall at present, and I do appeal to everyone to be patient.
Incidentally, at our recent AGM you will have heard our Chairman, Ann Pedersen, present a fully comprehensive report on the past year, and if you would like to see this again, or if you missed it, a copy is available in the office for your perusal.
Speaking for myself, I am very much looking forward to the Summer activities, and meeting you all there, I am sure it’s going to be great!

Masked Ball  - Second event of the year to celebrate our 50th Anniversary

“We stand on the shoulders of giants”

That is why Greyfriars is so successful and progressive

Christine & Neil Hamilton, Sir James & Lady Holman join the celebrationOne hundred and thirty-eight guests were entertained to a wonderful evening of convivial atmosphere, friendship, food, dance and entertainment.
The whole of the ground floor of Greyfriars was opened up, joining it all together with the courtyard being covered, and illuminated with Christmas lights.  There, a reception was provided with a drink of Winter Pimms.
The bar was managed and run by Dave and Jacqui Howells from Ringwood Musical & Dramatic Society, who along with helpers, Richard and Ali, ran the bar for the benefit of Greyfriars.
The masks were made by pupils of Year 8 at Ringwood School, as a whole year project.  They provided a vast range of different masks, colours and ideas, which were enjoyed, not only on the night, but by people around the town, where there were 12 outlets who provided us with the opportunity to display the masks on stands in their windows.  We are very grateful to them for their support.
Our very special guests were Sir James Holman and his wife Fiona, who joined us from London; and Christine Hamilton with her husband Neil, who came from their home in Wiltshire.  James and Christine are of course the son and daughter of Megan Holman, the founder of Greyfriars.  We also had the pleasure of the company of Ringwood Mayor, Cllr Brian Terry and his wife, Cllr Jacqueline Terry.
Our own “Special Events” team under the strong leadership of Brenda Titt provided a superb meal, which was appreciated by the guests and helpers on the night.
Roger Bettle was a tremendous support, with his ideas for decoration, transforming the halls, corridors and courtyard as being unrecognisable to regular users of Greyfriars.  He also had the support of members of Ex-Tablers, who kept us amused with stupendous entertainment to lots of hilarity.
Christine Hamilton, with the help of Gillian Habbin, who has been involved in Greyfriars since its inception, cut the Anniversary cake, with a ceremonial sword.
The evening concluded with dancing to the Allan James Band.
We have received some wonderful letters of praise, which I will quote from:
“The food was – predictably – absolutely superb, and very gracefully served”
“The spirit of Greyfriars not only lives on, but seems to go from strength to strength!”
“A most enjoyable social evening, congratulations and a big thank you to all who worked so hard to make the evening such a success”
“A superb evening, looking forward to the next one”
A very happy and enjoyable evening
“Excellent evening, why not make it an annual event?”
This event was achieved, because of the tremendous commitment of a very large, effective team of volunteers at Greyfriars who work well together.

Mimi Parry
Vice-Chairman

Greyfriars - Looking forward

In connection with Hampshire County Council’s Partnership Support Activities Scheme for local community centres, it has been suggested that Greyfriars organises a project which would get the over 60’s singing.  Apparently the idea for this project came from research which showed that singing will help the mind remain active and alert for longer.  We have therefore been asked to organise a taster session, and if popular, subsequently to arrange classes.  The idea is to “Get Hampshire Singing”, and at the end of the year it is hoped to bring together all the groups to celebrate.
If you are interested in taking part in such a project, would you please in the first instance give your name to our Manager, Janet Dolby, who will evaluate the possibility of such a group being set up and held at Greyfriars.

Having evaluated the results of the survey we carried out last year, there were two suggestions which we would like to try and take further.  Firstly, would anyone be interested in joining a “Book Club”?  We envisage this would entail a group of people reading the same book, and then having a discussion about it, possibly once a week.  If you are interested in this, and more importantly, if you would like to take on the running of it, would you please give your name to Janet.  Secondly, the possibility of running theatre/concert trips locally.  Is there anyone out there who would like to be responsible for doing the organising/booking, etc?  It might be possible to use our mini-buses instead of hiring a coach.  Again, please have a word with Janet.

Ann Pedersen
Chairman

Car Parking

Just to remind everyone please that the small car park on the left of the driveway is restricted to individual paid up members of  Greyfriars.  Car park stickers (gold this year) are available from the office, price 50p.  All other users of the building should park in the library or Blynkbonnie car parks.  Thank you.

Italy is a fascinating country, full of art, history and wonderful scenery.  Each month our speakers transport us to a variety of Italian regions, and help us explore Italian culture.  This year we have visited Sicily and lake Trasimeno, tasted Italian wine, learnt about buying property in Puglia, and painting classes in Italy.
Our talks are in English on the first Monday of the month, and end with refreshments.  Our next presentation is “Umbria, Green Heart of Italy” on 2nd June at 7.30 p.m.

A very enjoyable supper season ended with the AGM, followed by an excellent supper and a trip to China presented by Keith and Pam Adams.  The raffle proceeds were donated to the Ebenezer Hall Fund.
Many Baldwin engaged some extremely interesting and informative speakers, whose subjects were: “The Dorset-Newfoundland Connection”, “Favourite Places-Favourite Things”, “Antarctica” and “The Heal Project”.
Greyfriars, the Meeting House, The Heal Project, “Save the Albatross” also benefitted from the raffles.
We welcome Tom Glasson as Chairman, and Don Dudley as Speaker Secretary for 2008/09, and look forward to the start of next season on Saturday 25th October.
Have a very happy summer.

We were pleased to welcome two new members recently.  We are a small group of enthusiasts who are happy to share friendship and our skills with those seeking a rewarding hobby.

If you are interested why not come along on a Monday morning, or call Helen Cowling, as above.

Greyfriars Men’s Club
Secretary: Geoffrey Cornell                                          Telephone: 471282
Why not come and join us, and leave those chores for one morning a week.  The club meets every Thursday morning between 10.15 and 12 noon.  Members enjoy informal discussions on subjects raised by the members themselves, and they are therefore wide-ranging – from local to national and international issues.  We “put the world to rights” every Thursday over a cup of coffee or tea.
Our partners are not forgotten, as we hold a “Ladies Night”, usually in June.
Come along one Thursday to “look us over” – you will be made most welcome, or for more information telephone Geoffrey, as above.

Greyfriars Playreading Group: 2 – 4 p.m.
Russell Webb                                                                Telephone: 476618
The big news is that at the beginning of the year we actually acquired not one but two new members, thus proving that my patience has not been exhausted!  They are ladies living in or near Ringwood, but where oh where are the potential male members?
Plays read so far include the usual mixed bag: gritty portrayals of life in Dublin tenements under siege by Sean O’Casey (“Juno and the Paycock”, “The Shadow of a Gunman”, “The Plough and the Stars”), a “cyber” thriller by Eric Paice (“Deadly Embrace”), classic by John Osborne (“Inadmissable Evidence”, “The Entertainer”), Alan Plater’s unwitting and irreverent comedy (“and a Little Love Besides”) and the moralising J B Priestly (“An Inspector Calls” et al).
That’s all for now folks!

Greyfriars Playreading Group – Late afternoon
Chris Wightman                                                             Telephone: 475082
With both groups augmented this term, our playreading scope is broadened.
The late afternoon readers made one of their occasional recordings, this time of a pantomime, or rather a relatively solemn dramatisation of “The Sleeping Beauty”.  A copy of the recording was welcomed by a former member of the group Tom Steel, who himself wrote an earlier-recorded pantomime prior to moving to Plymouth.
A television documentary about the extravagant ancient Egyptian pharaoh, Akenatan, prompted us to read the scrip for an unrealised film, “Akenaten”, by the late Derek Jarman, currently the subject of a retrospective exhibition.
The Easter term concluded traditionally with a religious piece, “Our Lady’s Child”.

Ringwood Antiques Club
Chairman: Anthea Lowell                                              Telephone: 471824
Once again we have enjoyed a really exciting Spring programme. Paul Atterbury from the Antiques Road Show entertained a full house with his talk on “Weddings, 150 years of down the aisle style” followed in May by Chris Lewis who has produced the Road Show for 25 years and enthralled us with tales of the spectacular finds that have given the programme its reputation. Next year we are looking forward to welcoming back old friends like Matthew Denny and the incomparable Andrew Davies as well as prestigious new speakers.
New members and visitors are always welcome; all you need to join us is a curiosity about antiques!  For more information and our full programme please contact Anthea Lowell as above.

A very interesting talk and slide show was given by the charity “Samaritans Purse”, giving us an insight into the areas where shoeboxes are distributed: Bosnia and other Eastern European Countries where children are delighted to receive toys, etc, which they have never had.
Hats, scarves and mittens are also included, which is where we come in.  We must have reached nearly 2000 sets, knitted by our members and very many friends outside the club.

In February, a wonderful gold-medal awarded display of postal history by Dr Patrick Reid, President: British Society of Australian Philately – “Aspects of Tasmania” – demonstrated what can go wrong with the postal system, via a rare and unique collection of covers (envelopes).  March was Competition Night when members vied for trophies, judged by Julian Jones, Chairman of Hampshire Philatelic Federation.  Overall winner was John Davis with “St Helena War Tax”.  Runners up showed “Battle of the Atlantic” and “Invalid Stamps”.
The highlight of our year occurs at – “Ringpex” – our Annual Stamp Fair at Greyfriars on Saturday 7th June, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m; with stamps and postcards (12 dealers), free entry, ample public parking, a raffle and tasty refreshments, it’s a must for visitors!

The Club continues to enjoy well-attended meetings.  In January Jean McMillan gave a magical, very comprehensive and beautifully illustrated talk on the life and people of Bhutan.  Alan Wilson with a fund of knowledge took us to many interesting sites in Dorset, with some good ideas of new places to visit.  Audrey Olley gave us an intriguing insight into life in Japan both modern and traditional.  Excellent pictures showed the wildlife in a snowy landscape with some artistic ethereal musical sequences.  Our last full programme in April featured Uzbekistan and Tajikstan.  The AGM (21st May) will be followed by the indomitable Molly West, well qualified to talk on Glimpses of Italian Life.
We start again on 17th September, travelling the Silk Road.

We are a dinghy club based at Blashford Lake. We are also celebrating 50 years in 2008. Our racing season started in February and in May the training sessions for our junior and less experienced members will begin. We are a Volvo Championship Club, in recognition of our success in training young sailors for competitive racing and participate in the Royal Yachting Association’s “On Board” initiative to encourage schoolchildren with no experience of sailing into the sport, by actively promoting the club in local schools.
The club is always open to potential members however experienced. On Sundays there is usually someone around the club to answer questions.

For some 16 years Pat Meaden ran this group, but sadly she has passed away.  However, we are continuing, as she would have wished.  Two of our members have agreed to take charge of the spinners, and the weavers continue as before.  The weavers have a waiting list for the use of looms, but there is room for a couple of new spinners, if anyone was thinking of joining us.
We are not a teaching group, but help anyone who wishes to have a go.  We also meet informally for dyeing days, and various workshops.

Greens at Greyfriars
The New Forest Branch of the Green Party has been holding its regular meetings at Greyfriars since November 2007.
Our group are positive about the impact we can make on our world by leading a “lighter” lifestyle, but we do need government legislation to make this possible.
Each four to six weeks we have a short business meeting, followed by a presentation and discussion on an interesting topic.  This starts at about 8-8.15 p.m. and any interested folk are most welcome to join us.  We finish by 9.30 at the latest.  You may even get a cup of fair-trade tea!
The dates are advertised on our website: www.newforest.greenparty.org.uk.

Hampshire Genealogical Society – Ringwood
The Group meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month in the Ann Rose Hall.
In January, the Chairman of the HGS, Len Ruffell spoke on “Women I have Uncovered”, the story of four women who have had a great impact on his research.
We held a workshop in February, where research could be done on indexes on CD. Later this year in November there will be a workshop for beginners and new members; we are hoping a Wireless LAN is in place, so the Internet can be accessed. Roger Guttridge a regular contributor to the Stour and Avon Magazine spoke on “Smugglers” in March.
Our programme is advertised on-line on the Ringwood page of www.hgs-online.org.uk (at www.hgs-online.org.uk/gp_ringwood.asp) and on the notice board in Greyfriars.
Visitors and new members are always welcome and there are some very experienced researchers who are willing to help beginners and show them the way forward.

Our “top dog” is Lyn Williams whose dedication to the abused and abandoned dogs she cares for is like no other; no cages, no kennels and only Lyn does the process of cleaning-up behind the dogs.  Lyn personally arranges all the re-homing of the dogs plus she does much of the street/store collecting.  The biggest outlay is vet bills as all help is volunteered.
New fund-raising events are being created; February saw a walk in the New Forest for 50 people, and there are more to come.  Meanwhile, don’t miss the usual Table-Top Sales on 17th May and 22nd November, and the Fun Dog Show on 3rd August at Kingston.

Secretary: Ken Warren                                      Telephone: O1202 895124
2008 has started with the bereavement of three of our members:  Douglas Farthing aged 89 died on 5th January, Maurice Bailey aged 77 died 22nd January, and Malcolm Daly aged 63.  All three were well known about town characters of distinction who are sadly missed.  Of late we have had several new members join, which has kept our numbers steadily increasing.
Between the dates of 22nd June and 26th July we will be hosting up to 20 children from Belarus, who live in a contaminated and deprived area affected by the Chernobyl disaster.  They benefit with several weeks of respite care away from their contaminated area, so that their immune systems can regenerate to extend their very shortened lives.  The little known charity called “Chernobyl Children’s Life Line” deserve a great deal of help.

Naomi House and Jacksplace@Naomihouse
Shirley Tobias                                                               Telephone: 476055
Naomi House celebrated its 10th birthday last June, and is for children from two months to 17 years.  Ten years ago, youngsters were not expected to live into their late teens, but with improvements in medical science these youngsters are now living into their 20’s and Naomi House is too small for them.
Our new venture is building Jacksplace@Naomihouse, specifically for these young adults.  This is budgeted at £12m.
We’ve received a wonderful £6m legacy from Jack Witham, which gives us a kick-start for building on the Naomi House site.  However, we still have to raise £2.5m annually to keep Naomi House running!  Please help us to help them.

New Forest Guild Weavers, Spinners and Dyers
Louise                                                                 Telephone: 01202 397873
We weave, we spin and we dye!
However, there are many other crafts that we enjoy; knitting, crochet, felt making, jewellery and rug making to name but a few.  We meet from 10am to 4pm on the second Saturday of the month at Greyfriars (excluding July and August).  As well as working at our crafts, we also enjoy listening to visiting speakers and hold workshops to try new skills. A recent workshop has taught us how to make willow baskets, another how to dye using plant material.  To find out more about us, have a look at our new web site, www.nfwsd.co.uk or come along and visit us.
Phone Louise for details.

Sally Whyte                                                                   Telephone: 471028
Poulner Players would be delighted to welcome any new onstage/backstae members, aged 10 to adult, to their friendly group.  We mount three full scale productions each year: a family musical or pantomime in February; a play in May; and a studio production in August.  We are in our fifth year of professionally led weekend courses on different aspects of theatre.  We have regular social events, a theatre club and pub nights.  Each year we raise money for a nominated charity (this year the 1st Poulner Scout Malawi Expedition; the Stable Family Home Trust and DebRA).
Our next production “A Month of Sundays” by Bob Larbey, runs from 28th to 31st May, at Poulner Church Hall.
Further information from Sally Whyte, as above.

P S V Circle
Roger Janes                                                        Telephone: 01202 886441
Our meetings are well attended, by at least 14 members, frequently 18, according to work commitments!
The bus and coach scene has been somewhat subdued last year, and due to Health & Safety rules at operators’ premises we are no longer permitted to visit.  So there was not a trip out, as previously.  It seems the prospects for 2008 are brighter, and it is hoped a visit to a bus builder will be possible.

Ringwood Bowling Club
Ray Ollis                                                                       Telephone: 489155
Our much-loved Yvonne Knight passed away in December and Eileen Clarke is the new Ladies’ Secretary.
The Club’s annual weekend break at Warners, Bembridge was enjoyed by all who went and the short mat sessions in the Clubhouse have been well attended.  Our thoughts are turning to the outdoor season, the Green is looking in excellent condition and, subject to weather conditions, opens on 21st April. The Bournemouth leagues start on 3rd May, and the New Forest season opens with Ringwood men, the Champions, playing ‘The Rest’ on 4th May. Our male membership figures are slightly down on 2007, our lady members are similar, and new bowlers are always welcome. Contact Ray Ollis as above for details.

Ringwood Camera Club
Richard Soley                                                     Telephone: 01202 825170
The Camera club is now moving into the digital age having been awarded £4500 from the National Lottery. This is to be spent on the purchase of a digital projector, lap top and screen plus some associated software. It will be used mainly for ‘projected image’ competitions between other local camera clubs and members presentations. We are soon to start basic camera/photoshop/handling classes for those who have just started photography and obviously the equipment will be of great help in this endeavour. If you want to know more then give us a ring or visit our web site www.ringwoodcameraclub.co.uk

Ringwood Clover Club
Mrs Shirley Taylor                                                        Telephone: 475539
Our November speaker was Mrs Emery “A Victoria Christmas” which was a very informative talk.  In December we held our annual Christmas Dinner, this time at the Muse Restaurant where we had a lovely evening attended by 40 of our members.
Mr Daniels was our speaker in January and he held us spellbound with his magic tricks.  Our speaker in February was Denise Edwards who spoke about her experiences as a stunt woman in the film and television industry.  She certainly kept us enthralled with her stories.
Since our AGM we have welcomed some new members and visitors.  We meet every fourth Thursday in Ebenezer Hall so please come and join us if you can.  Incidentally, our chosen charity for 2007/08 is “The Ebenezer Hall Project”.

It’s never too late!
The use of the ‘Centre’ steam and sauna rooms after our main swim session is proving very popular.  A warm welcome for new members!

Ringwood Natural History Society
Pat Holder                                                                    Telephone:  672724
Once again, members, and visitors, enjoyed a varied programme of evening meetings. Talks, illustrated with excellent photographs, ranged from “Underwater Purbeck” to “Canyonlands of the Western States.” At a recent “Members’ Own Evening” we were treated to an interesting selection of’ pictures, some taken locally and others from further afield for example the Galapagos and Madagascar.
During our walks this winter we saw many different fungi, numerous species of birds, and, more recently, a profusion of wild flowers, including bluebells early in March.
We have a busy programme of summer outings to observe the diverse wildlife of our region, and we are looking forward to resuming evening meetings in September.
Anyone, novice or expert, interested in natural history is welcome.

Ringwood Society
Secretary: Maureen Mills                                              Telephone: 479514
Since its inception in the sixties this pro-active club has been influential in protecting the character of Ringwood.  We are not against change and growth, but we would like it to be in character.  If you agree with this view why not join the society and support its work!  The bigger we are the more strength we have.  The society meets twice a year, but the committee meets monthly to forward the ideas generated at these meetings.
Come along to Greyfriars on 15th May at 7.30 p.m. to the AGM, minimum business, maximum discussion, and make sure your views are known.  Ringwood is a lovely town, come and help to keep it so.
For more information contact the secretary, as above.

Ringwood Writers’ Circle
The Circle started in 1986 and is still going strong in its 22nd year.  This is longer than many Circles, so we must be doing something right!
It has always been the case that those who join a writers’ group have benefitted from the interaction with other writers, and since we have some vacancies for new members we would welcome anyone who writes, or wishes to write, to join us.
Our latest Anthology was produced late in 2007, and our next project is an anthology of wartime memories.  If you have any such memories we would like your input.
We meet every Friday from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at Greyfriars.  Why not come along?

Ringwood and Burley Band
Secretary: Myra Randall                                    Telephone: 01202 514990
The band has had a busy year in 2007, a variety of engagements carried out, ranging from a successful concert in the Parish Church in aid of the Jigsaw Appeal Fund, trade shows, religious services, and over the Christmas period carol playing in Burley, Ringwood, and our annual Christmas Concert.
The band had a change of Musical Director during last summer, due to our MD David Randall suffering a broken arm which did not respond well to treatment, and he was unable to continue in the position, although he remains a playing member of the band.  In August the band appointed Mr Lloyd Bartlett to the post of MD.  Lloyd is well known in the area as a teacher and conductor and the band were fortunate in obtaining the services of a musician of his calibre.
The band practises at the Ebenezer Hall on Friday evenings from 8-10 p.m., new playing members are always welcome.  Information on the band can be obtained from our website: www.ringwoodandburleyband.co.uk.

Ringwood & District Old People’s Housing Society
Secretary: Jenny Pestridge                                             Telephone: 473879
We have properties to rent at three locations in Ringwood.  The accommodation is warden assisted, and consists of self-contained studios, and one and two bedroom flats with all amenities.  There is also one double flat, which has been adapted for a disabled person and several of our flats have recently been refurbished and redecorated to a high standard.
The rents reflect the fact that the Society is a non-profit making organisation, and priority is given to Ringwood residents, or those with strong Ringwood connections.  These flats are available for retired people over 60 years of age, who are able to live independently, and who are financially unable to purchase flats in the private sector.  The Society regrets that it is unable to accept pets.  Please contact Monica Skinner – telephone 477338.

RAF Ibsley Control Tower Project at the Crossroads ?
Feasibility Study Co-ordinator: Mike Halpin    mikehalpin@waitrose.com
In 2006 a feasibility study commenced to investigate whether the former RAF Ibsley Control Tower, now “abandoned” within the Blashford Lakes – could be eventually restored and used possibly as an interpretation/viewing facility.
The study, funded by the excellent Hanson Concrete Trust, has been making steady progress until recently when two major setbacks were encountered. A very positive listing report and Grade II  recommendation by English Heritage has been turned down by the “infamous” Margaret Hodge, the Culture Minister of “ the proms” fame. An appeal has now been lodged by the Ibsley Historical Group.
Secondly, all work has been halted on the project, pending what will now be a long drawn out Bat survey, under the direction of Natural England.
I wonder what those brave airmen who flew from Ibsley between 1941 and 1944 and who lost their lives, would be thinking now !

Our next major fund-raising event will be our Annual Family Horse and Cycle Ride on Saturday 17th May, starting at The Royal Oak, North Gorley, at 10 a.m.

Chris Johnson                                                                Telephone: 479185
The club for “special people”, learning difficulties and mild disabilities continues to meet at Greyfriars every other Tuesday in the friendly surroundings of The Megan Holman Coffee Lounge between 7.00 and 9.00 p.m. for light refreshments and indoor games.
The ages of members tend to be late 20’s to 55.  Despite the age differences everyone gets on well together, and the introduction of some low energy indoor games like skittles, indoor golf and bingo seems to have promoted the social aspect of the club.
If you know of anyone that fits into the club’s category and think that they would benefit from some social interaction with like minded people, please bring them along to have a look.  Enquirers and carers are welcome.

Secretary: Richard Prosser                                 Telephone: 01264 889335
Wessex Chairman (and Vice Chairman within the Standing Committee), Geoff Knight, has intimated within his Chairman’s Report that he feels the time is right for him to stand down.  I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of us all to thank him for his outstanding contributions to the NFSA and our sport in general.  Geoff still wants to be involved with the Wessex and we are grateful for this with all his valuable experience gained over the years.  He was elected firstly onto the Wessex Committee in 1980 and became our Chairman in 1983.  Geoff resigned in 1993, only to take on the role of Chairman again eight years later in 2001, a position he has held since then.
