The Greyfriars Minibuses and the service they provide
The generosity of many individuals and organisations enables Greyfriars to operate two Minibuses. Both of these vehicles, fitted with wheelchair lifts, have been supplied and are serviced by local firms. The lifts enable passengers with walking difficulties to access the Minibuses, either in their wheelchairs or with the help of walking aides.
The Minibuses couldn’t operate without the voluntary support of our 30+ drivers and over a dozen escorts. Every driver is assessed by one of our MiDAS examiners, which is repeated every 4 years.
In conjunction with ‘Old People’s Welfare,’ Greyfriars provides a weekly ‘door to door’ shopping trip for able-bodied passengers who, having pre-booked, are brought to the town centre to shop on their own for about 90 minutes and then taken home with their shopping. The Minibuses are designed to provide the safe carriage of our passengers’ shopping and walking aids.
Groups wishing to make use of our Minibuses need to be affiliated to Greyfriars or be a Greyfriars’ Club. Their drivers must be voluntary and have undertaken the MiDAS assessment.
Greyfriars’ Minibuses can be used to provide transport for passengers on outings, to Church services, meetings and other excursions.
The Association is always looking for new drivers and escorts. If you’re interested please contact Janet Dolby, the Manager at Greyfriars (01425 472613).
